There were times last season when it looked like Eddie Howe had brought the entertainers back to Newcastle United.
The Magpies scored goals for fun last season, with Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon both hitting double figures in the Premier League. Newcastle United had no issues finding the back of the net, with their real problem being keeping it out at the other end.
Eddie Howe‘s side were involved in some thrilling contests. There was the 4-3 win over West Ham and the 4-4 draw with Luton Town.
Even on the opening day of last season, Newcastle smashed Aston Villa 5-1. After that game, no one thought Unai Emery’s side would go on to qualify for the Champions League.
Newcastle United have a real issue

However, it is a different story in the 2024/25 season for Newcastle United. Eddie Howe’s free scoring Magpies are no more, with his players rarely finding the back of the net.
Newcastle have only scored more than once on two occasions. That was in the 2-1 wins over Tottenham Hotspur and Wolves.
In fact, Newcastle have not actually tasted victory since that win at Molineux, when Harvey Barnes’ screamer completed a remarkable comeback.
The Magpies have drawn blanks in their previous two games, drawing 0-0 with Everton and losing 1-0 to Brighton. Newcastle were poor in front of goal against Brighton, as they slumped to a rather worrying defeat.
There was also a narrow 1-0 win over Wimbledon, in which Newcastle struggled to create chances against their League Two opponents and had to rely on a Fabian Schar penalty to advance to the next round of the Carabao Cup.
Why Newcastle expect to start scoring goals very soon
Newcastle have struggled to create chances, but that changed against Brighton.
Howe’s players carved open some wonderful opportunities on Saturday, only to squander them. Alexander Isak missed key chances for Newcastle, much to his disappointment.
He did not look sharp upon his return from injury, but there is hope that the Magpies’ goalscoring woes will soon come to an end.
That is according to the Athletic, who have been told by ‘dressing room insiders’ that Newcastle expect to hit their stride in front of goal very soon.
That is due to the imminent return of Callum Wilson and the belief that Isak will find form and regain his confidence.
Having two fit strikers can open the floodgates for Newcastle
It is quite a simplistic view, but an understandable one. A confident Isak would have buried those chances against Brighton, particularly the one in the first half when Bruno Guimaraes played him through.
And while Isak might not be at his confident best, he will soon be under pressure. The return of Wilson is a timely one, as Newcastle need their two top strikers to start pushing each other once again.
They have rarely been able to properly dovetail during the past 12 months, to the detriment of Eddie Howe’s side.
But now Wilson is nearing his latest comeback, and his presence should inspire Isak to play better. They can push each other, and that should result in the goals flowing for Newcastle United once again…hopefully.
