It’s fair to say that Newcastle United fans have been put through the ringer in 2021, but the overriding emotion that most fans will feel is hope.
With PIFs takeover finally going through and Eddie Howe at the helm, 2022 promises to be a blockbuster.
But who was the Magpies’ breakthrough player in 2021…
Joelinton
After being signed from Hoffenheim for a club-record £40m fee (BBC Sport) on a six-year deal, in the summer of 2019, the Brazilian striker had a huge price tag on his shoulders which brought huge pressure.
Tasked with wearing the iconic number nine shirt, Joelinton struggled to make the transition from scoring goals in the Bundesliga, to the Premier League.
The 25-year-old’s struggles resulted in Callum Wilson taking over the number nine shirt and Joelinton switching to number seven.
With 11 goals to his name as he approaches his century of Newcastle appearances, it was hard to see where Joelinton fitted into Steve Bruce’s side.
But since Eddie Howe was appointed, Joelinton has become a vital cog of the Bournemouth manager’s side.
He looks re-energised, reinvigorated and with the bit between his teeth. He looks a completely different player under Howe.
Joelinton has started every game since the 44-year-old took the reins and his importance to the Newcastle side looks to be growing.
Despite points proving hard to come by, Joelinton has arguably become one of Newcastle’s most trusted and consistent performers.
He is rapidly building a cult hero status relationship with the Geordies and his endless work rate and desire to fight for the team has endeared himself to the Newcastle fans.
With several players in Newcastle’s squad likely to have an uncertain future at the club, Joelinton could become a major part of Newcastle’s ambitious journey.
