Get to know Sean Longstaff, Newcastle’s homegrown midfield star

Sean Longstaff came through the ranks at Newcastle United as a child and now features for the first-team week-in-week-out.

Having learned his trade at the Newcastle academy, Sean Longstaff got to live his childhood dream and represent his hometown club.

Making his debut in 2018, the midfielder has since gone on to represent the Magpies over 150 times, becoming a key part of the Newcastle first-team under manager Eddie Howe.

Despite Longstaff being a regular fixture in the Magpies lineup alongside the likes of Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton, there are some things you may not know about the Toon man.

Sean David Longstaff is currently 26-years-old at the time of writing. He was born on October 30th, 1997.

Longstaff is English having been born in the outskirts of Newcastle, in North Shields. He also spent time growing up in Sweden, where his father David played ice hockey for one of the top sides in Stockholm.

Sean Longstaff stands at approximately 6ft 1 inches tall (1.87m), which allows him to be an aerial presence in the midfield.

Sean Longstaff came through the Newcastle ranks alongside his younger brother Matty. The pair would both feature for the Magpies first-team but Matty would eventually leave the club in 2023, now plying his trade in Canada with Toronto FC.

Sean Longstaff comes from a very strong sporting background. His father David is a former Great Britain ice hockey player, who featured over 100 times for the national side.

David Longstaff is also the cousin of former Celtic and Bolton star Alan Thompson.

The Newcastle midfielder went viral in the summer of 2024 for notching a wicket against the son of former England cricketer Phil Mustard.
