A lot of onlookers appear to be eager for Eddie Howe to fail as Newcastle United manager.
While he was the talk of the Toon last season after qualifying for the Champions League, the 2023/24 campaign has been much tougher.
Newcastle United are certainly not going to qualify for the Champions League, and now have 10 games to save their season. Eddie Howe will be desperate to make it into Europe, as he will know that he will be under pressure if he fails to qualify.
A lot of that pressure will probably come from the media, as the owners seem to have complete faith in him. They view him as a ‘gem’, and want him to continue in his position at St James’ Park.
But people outside the club seem keen for Newcastle to find a replacement, believing that Howe has taken the Magpies as far as he can. That is not a sentiment that is shared by most Toon fans, myself included.
And while the likes of Richard Keys bang the drum about Jose Mourinho replacing Howe as Newcastle boss, the club continues to prepare for a future with the former Bournemouth man at the helm.

When Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United contract expires
And Howe’s position is strengthened by the massive contract he has at St James’ Park.
When he first arrived in November 2021, he signed a deal that ran until 2024. But Howe’s success quickly earned him an extension, and he signed a new multi-year contract in August 2022. Within a year, he was rewarded with a new deal, and a report from the Telegraph states that it is actually a very long deal.
According to the Telegraph, Eddie Howe’s current Newcastle United contract runs until the summer of 2027.
Eddie Howe is in a position of strength
With three more years left to run on his current deal, Howe is in a position of strength.
If the Toon owners did decide to get rid of him, they would have to pay him off. That might be easier said than done considering the financial limitations that Newcastle are experiencing right now due to PSR.
Giving him that big contract back in 2022 was a real show of faith. At that point, all he had done was guide Newcastle to survival. There had been no Wembley final or Champions League journey.
While this season has clearly been a step in the wrong direction, it was always going to happen after the supreme highs of last year. And it has been an even tougher campaign given the injury issues that Newcastle have experienced.
But this is a long-term project, and Newcastle United decided that Eddie Howe is the right man to lead it. Those feels are not going to waver in the immediate future.
