Newcastle United have been given a shock boost on the eve of their Carabao Cup quarter final clash with Chelsea.

The Magpies have been preparing for the game with the view that Lewis Hall will not be eligible for the game at Stamford Bridge, as he is still only on loan at St James’ Park from Chelsea.

While he is expected to become a permanent Toon player in the summer, Newcastle United would need to receive permission from Chelsea to allow Hall to play against them in the Carabao Cup contest.

That always felt unlikely, but a new update from the Chronicle has stated that the Magpies have received an early Christmas gift from their London rivals.

According to the Chronicle, Lewis Hall is going to be eligible to play for Newcastle against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.

The 19-year-old has started both of Newcastle’s games in the competition so far, and scored a brilliant goal during the 3-0 win over Manchester United in the previous round. That was his best performance since joining Eddie Howe’s side.

Now Hall has the chance to return to Chelsea, boasting the opportunity to play at Stamford Bridge for the first time as an away player. It will likely be a strange experience for the teenager, and one that will further prove that his time with the Blues is over.

There has been some speculation that he could actually return to Chelsea next year, but that possibility has since been played down.

It has been an interesting few days for Hall, and this surprising twist now gives him the chance to really solidify himself as a Newcastle United player and someone who can have a bright future on Tyneside – if Eddie Howe decides to play him.

He did feature during Saturday’s 3-0 win over Fulham, coming on as a late substitute. He was lively down the left, but will be eager to get more minutes under his belt, and he will be particularly keen to play against the club that have already agreed to sell him for £28million next year.
