Newcastle United chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan was in attendance for the Magpies’ 4-3 win over Nottingham Forest.

The PIF chief almost witnessed Eddie Howe’s side throw away a three-goal lead. Fortunately, they held on, as Newcastle United beat Nottingham Forest to move up to fifth in the Premier League table.

It was a massive victory for the club, on what will have been an important day on Tyneside. It is rare that Yasir Al-Rumayyan visits, and this trip came at a time when the future of St James’ Park is being debated.

Yasir Al-Rumayyan’s message to Newcastle United officials

After the game, Eddie Howe spoke to Al-Rumayyan. However, the Newcastle United manager insists it was a very brief conversation.

Al-Rumayyan will have had plenty of conversations on Sunday, and the now the Chronicle have provided details of what the Toon chairman said to senior club officials ahead of the game against Nottingham Forest.

According to the Chronicle, Al-Rumayyan told ‘leading figures’ at Newcastle United that PIF are still extremely ambitious almost three-and-a-half years after buying the club.

The Chronicle add that the chairman spoke to the likes of Steve Nickson and Steve Harper before Sunday’s game.

PIF chief presented with St James’ Park proposals

While Al-Rumayyan insists that PIF are still ambitious, that will soon be put to the test.

The Chronicle state that Al-Rumayyan was shown stadiums plans, as Newcastle United decide what to do with St James’ Park.

It is the hottest debate on Tyneside right now – should they stay or should they go? Many want to stay at St James’ Park and expand, while others are eager for a brand new stadium.

But PIF will make the decision on St James’ Park, and it remains to be seen what their preference is.

Mehrdad Ghodoussi said Newcastle would not leave St James’ Park three years ago, but he is no longer at the club. There has been a shift in attitude, and it will be interesting to see whether supporters of a new stadium will be able to convince Al-Rumayyan that it is something that PIF should invest more than £1billion in.

There is a third option that could see Newcastle United give St James’ Park a makeover, but avoid any structural work. That would certainly be the cheapest option for PIF, but perhaps not the best for the fans.
