Eddie Howe reveals what he discussed with Yasir Al-Rumayyan after Newcastle’s win over Nottingham Forest

Newcastle United’s dramatic 4-3 win over Nottingham Forest was watched by club and PIF chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan.

It was confirmed earlier this month that PIF planned to fly to England to watch Newcastle United in action at St James’ Park.

The Saudi decision-makers are set to discuss several topics around the club’s future, including the £1.2bn decision on a new stadium.

After Newcastle’s win over Forest, Yasir Al-Rumayyan was spotted at St James’ Park on the pitch shortly after the full-time whistle. Al-Rumayyan commented on the Newcastle takeover earlier in the week, and now he faces one of the biggest decisions in the club’s history.

PIF’s visit to Tyneside also gave club chiefs a chance to catch up with Eddie Howe, and the Newcastle manager offered some insight into the conversation that took place.

It was PIF that made the decision to sack Steve Bruce and replace him with Howe back in 2021.

Three years into Howe’s spell at Newcastle, they can look back on that decision with a lot of pride. After keeping Newcastle afloat in his first season, Howe has led the Magpies back to the Champions League while reaching two cup finals – including the 2025 Carabao Cup final.

Howe got to catch up with Yasir Al-Rumayyan at St James’ Park on Sunday, and he revealed what was discussed.

“I spoke to him very briefly after the game, just for 10 or 15 seconds. I’m not 100% sure (why he’s here), it was just good to see him,” Howe said, as quoted by the Northern Echo.

When asked what was said during the conversation, Howe added: “A couple of swear words from me about the game, I think.

“He was in the same emotional state as I was about the game, so it was a nice moment. He’s very invested in the football club, he’s on top of everything. It was definitely great to see him.”

How PIF feel about Eddie Howe

Towards the end of 2024, there were a few questions raised to Howe about his future at Newcastle after a dip in form.

However, PIF always backed Howe and sacking him never crossed the mind of those in charge at St James’ Park.

Despite links to Jose Mourinho, PIF always remained convinced that Howe was the right man for the job.

After surviving that dip in form, Howe responded to his critics in fashion by going on a nine-match winning streak, ending all speculation over his future at Newcastle.

The Magpies are now targeting another season in the Champions League and have the opportunity to end their trophy drought at Wembley next month.
