Despite the rumours, Eddie Howe believes Allan Saint-Maximin has a long term future with Newcastle United.

The winger has been linked with a move away from St James’ Park over the past week. The likes of Wolves, Aston Villa and Everton have all been mentioned as possible suitors.

It’s led to debate from fans, with most keen to see the Frenchman remain a Magpie. He’s an incredible talent who gets you on the edge of your seat. Sadly, he’s going through a tough spell at the moment.

His recent performances have likely increased the speculation over his future, and Howe was asked about the player ahead of the game with Wolves.

When asked if Saint-Maximin has a future with Newcastle, the manager responded with two words – ‘absolutely yes’.

According to the Athletic, ‘those close to Saint-Maximin’ state there is ‘no truth’ in the rumours that he could push to leave Newcastle this summer.

However, the report adds that sources close to the player ‘neither confirm nor deny’ claims that he wants a new contract. It has been reported that Saint-Maximin wants his wages increased to match the new high earners at the club.

Perhaps a new contract will come in time, but it probably isn’t Newcastle’s priority right now. Saint-Maximin’s current contract runs until 2026. Meanwhile, Howe has important players whose deals expire with the next few months.

But the good news is that Saint-Maximin doesn’t want to leave. If he’s not going to push for an exit then it seems incredibly likely that he’ll remain in the North East.

That might change if a big offer comes Newcastle’s way. However, recent performances would suggest interested clubs won’t want to pay a huge fee.

Newcastle need Saint-Maximin and Saint-Maximin needs Newcastle. The club and player are suited perfectly. He’s someone that the fans love and will pay to see. And he has the ability to win games on his own.
