It is rare you see a team do something like that to Pep Guardiola’s men, which is why Aston Villa deserve so much praise for what they achieved on Wednesday night.

They are certainly contenders to qualify for next season’s Champions League, while there is an outside chance of a title charge as well.

Their surge makes Newcastle’s opening day win all the more impressive, and the Magpies are not a million miles away from catching Villa either. They are currently six points behind, but can reduce that gap to three with a win over Everton at Goodison Park.
