What Miguel Almiron’s old Atlanta United teammates used to tell him not to do

Miguel Almiron can split opinion at Newcastle United.

While the forward proved so good in front of goal at times last season, there have been frustrations this season.

Indeed, during Newcastle’s Boxing Day defeat to Nottingham Forest, a member of the coaching staff reportedly punched the dugout watching the forward fail to use his right foot when he had a chance.

At times, Almiron doesn’t convince.

Still, there can be little doubt about his work rate. So effective off the ball against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, Almiron played a key role in Newcastle’s second goal against Sunderland on Saturday thanks to his pressing.

It was a standout performance from the 29-year-old and now interesting insight into his work rate has emerged.

Miguel Almiron: What Atlanta teammates used to tell Newcastle star

According to The Athletic, Almiron’s former teammates at Atlanta United would actually tell the forward not to do so much work defensively, in order to save himself for attacking duties.

“Back in the MLS, Almiron’s Atlanta United team-mates used to implore him to run less,” they wrote.

“’Let us do the defensive work,’ the club captain told him. ‘We’re willing to do extra running to help you out so you can do your thing offensively.’”

Miguel Almiron: Newcastle star’s work rate is a huge asset

Some of the frustrations about Almiron are certainly understandable.

Though last season’s purple patch was brilliant to see, his overall tally stands at 30 goals and 11 assists in 194 games since his move from America, so he’s hardly the most prolific outlet.

Still, that kind of defensive work is a huge asset for Newcastle. Yes it would be nice to have a devastating right-sided forward to go along with Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon but Almiron’s uses cannot be overlooked.

Newcastle will need that kind of work ethic if they’re going to turn this season around.
