Ally McCoist was very impressed with Miguel Almiron’s defensive efforts for Newcastle United as they drew 1-1 with PSG in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Newcastle had to really dig in towards the end of the game if they were to come away with a result and were so unfortunate to concede a late penalty after all of their hard work.
McCoist was impressed with Almiron’s efforts in particular as he claimed the winger was ‘different class’ on the defensive end while commentating for TNT Sports.
McCoist impressed with Almiron’s work rate
Almiron is known to be one of Newcastle’s hardest workers and is one of the first names on the team sheet for Eddie Howe because of the effort he puts in, and against PSG he took this to a whole new level.
The whole team knew they were going to have to really dig in and have to play the full 90 given the number of injuries and lack of options on the bench.
This did not phase the £21m Almiron, however, as the Paraguayan played brilliantly for Newcastle in his second game back from injury and was a huge help defensively for Kieran Trippier who was up against PSG’s star man Kylian Mbappe.
McCoist was full of praise for the winger as he battled hard to earn a crucial point in Paris.
While commentating on the game, McCoist said: “Oh different class, if you’re a full-back, you really, really appreciate your mate coming back to you.
“Really different class from Almiron.”

Almiron key in Newcastle’s opening goal
While his defensive efforts were again key for Newcastle, Almiron also had his part to play in the goal with his shot being parried by Gianluigi Donnarumma into the path of Alexander Isak to fire home.
The 29-year-old may not be the most technically gifted in the team, but you simply cannot buy what he brings to the squad and the energy that he will give you in every single game.
With PSG getting so high up the pitch, Almiron’s pace was also very important in getting in behind their defence and exploiting the two centre backs in order to create space for Newcastle’s attackers.
They may not have come away with three points, but Almiron and his teammates can walk away with their heads held high and knowing they’ve still got it all to play for against AC Milan.
