This is not the first time Jose Mourinho has flirted with the idea of managing Newcastle United.

On the exact same day as Eddie Howe’s three-year anniversary as Newcastle manager, Jose Mourinho‘s name flooded the headlines.

According to The Guardian, the current Fenerbahce boss believes he has ‘unfinished business’ in the Premier League and is keen to take over Newcastle if the opportunity arises.

The report claims Mourinho ‘reached out’ to intermediaries in order to be kept updated about the Newcastle job.

Howe is expected to qualify for Europe this season. There is not any immediate pressure on his job, but with Newcastle only 12th in the Premier League table, it could ramp up.

The Newcastle board have tasked Howe with being consistent – something that has so far proved difficult this season.

Jose Mourinho eyes Newcastle United job

Nothing screams pressure like a two-times Champions League-winning manager openly pursuing your job.

However, Yasir Al-Rumayyan has backed Howe and continues to support him, with reports this week suggesting the Mourinho links have mystified those at St James’ Park.

It also does not seem a move that fans are keen on with Newcastle supporters having their say on Mourinho potentially becoming the next manager.

The ‘Special One’ does not boast the same reputation he did a decade ago when he was leading Chelsea to his third Premier League title.

However, the Newcastle job is one that Mourinho has always seemed to admire.

What Jose Mourinho said about Newcastle in 2018

Mourinho’s love for Newcastle dates back to when he was an understudy of Sir Bobby Robson at Barcelona.

He has faced the Magpies plenty of times throughout his career and in 2018 he spoke passionately about the club.

As quoted by Shields Gazette, Mourinho said: “I always felt beautiful matches at St James’ Park.

“But difficult matches. I like to go there. I like the feeling of going to Mr Robson’s home. I like that feeling.

“I like the stadium, I think the stadium is really nice. I like the atmosphere. They are a good, enthusiastic crowd. I like the Geordies and I like to go there.”

Six years on, it seems Mourinho is keen to come back to St James’ Park and take a spot in the home dugout. Unfortunately, it seems like too little, too late for the ‘Special One’.
