When the Newcastle United players exited the St James’ Park pitch after the win against Brighton and headed back to the dressing room, they were greeted by a familiar face.
Jacob Murphy was not in the Newcastle squad for the game on Thursday night, with Eddie Howe stating that he was a doubt beforehand. This came after he was only fit enough for the bench against Leeds United.
Fortunately, the Magpies were able to get the job done without the 28-year-old, meaning we need just one more win to secure a top four finish and Champions League football.
But even though Murphy was not involved in the 4-1 victory, he was still there to celebrate with his teammates.

After the game, Newcastle’s official Twitter account released a behind the scenes video of the players heading back into the dressing room.
They were met by four players who were not involved in the game: Loris Karius, Emil Krafth, Mark Gillespie and Murphy.
There were high fives all round, with the Toon players buzzing to see Murphy after an incredible victory. High fives morphed into typical manly handshakes, and they morphed into hugs.
Eddie Howe was the first to embrace the winger, saying ‘yes Murphy’ as they celebrated. Then there were big squeezes from coaches Simon Weatherstone and Graeme Jones, as well as a secret handshake with Miguel Almiron and a roar from goalscorer Bruno Guimaraes.

Murphy was not the only injured Newcastle player to be with the group after the win. The traditional post-victory photo included Jamaal Lascelles, Matt Ritchie and Sean Longstaff – three players who are also currently unavailable.
It is great to see players that are injured or not selected involved in the post-match celebrations. It is testament to the team ethos that Howe has created, with every individual made to feel a part of the success.
Murphy typifies this, and appears to be such a popular member of the group. His teammates love him, and were buzzing to celebrate with him after another vital victory.
The celebrations on Thursday night were brilliant – just imagine what they will be like if we win on Monday!
