What is Eddie Howe’s managerial record like against Norwich City?

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe will be hoping to secure his first win as Toon boss in tonight’s pivotal clash against fellow strugglers Norwich City in the Premier League.

A win against the Canaries at St James’ Park would set Howe and his team up nicely ahead of welcoming his former club Burnley to Tyneside on Saturday.

Anything but a win against Dean Smith’s side will do little to building morale, which has been hammered after 13 Premier League games without a win.

With six points to our name and 25 games left to be played, we need at least 30 points to give ourselves a fighting chance of survival.

But what does Howe’s record look like against Norwich….

Expecting a tight affair

The 44-year-old has faced the Norfolk-based side on nine different occasions. From those encounters, Howe has won three, lost four and drawn twice.

After winning his first match against Norwich, as manager of Burnley 2-1, in February 2011, the former Bournemouth manager then went four games without a win over the newly-promoted club.

His next three points came via a 3-0 win for the Cherries, in January 2016, at the Vitality Stadium.

Prior to that, Howe had lost three of his last four against Norwich, which included a 4-1 hammering in the FA Cup third round, whilst he was managing Burnley.

But, in the only positive result he got in those four games, Callum Wilson netted an equaliser in a 1-1 draw at Carrow Road, in August 2014.

That’s Wilson’s only goal against Norwich in six matches, but he is yet to face the Canaries as a Toon player.

In the last three encounters, Howe has won an FA Cup fourth-round tie 2-1 at the Vitality Stadium, drawn 0-0 at home in the Premier League and the most recent game resulted in a 1-0 league loss at Carrow Road, in January 2020, due to a penalty from Teemu Pukki.

Howe currently has a points per match average of 1.22 against Norwich, but tonight’s clash, which will be his 10th match against the Canaries, is arguably one of the biggest games Howe has had in his managerial career.
