Newcastle United teenager Lewis Miley is continuing to impress, despite being asked to play in a different role as of late.

After coming into Eddie Howe‘s team in November, Lewis Miley has been a constant presence in the Newcastle United side.

He made his return form illness away to Borussia Dortmund on November 7th, and he has featured in every Toon game since then. During that time, only three of his appearances have came as a substitute.

Miley has predominantly played as an ‘eight’, either on the right or left. He has looked comfortable, and even managed to score his first ever Toon goal back in December.

However, recent weeks have seen Miley’s role change. The 17-year-old has been asked to play as the ‘number six’ in the middle of Newcastle’s midfield, and he looked very comfortable there against Bournemouth.

He was easily the Magpies’ best player in the 2-2 draw, with his performance hinting that could be his best position long-term. According to the Athletic’s Chris Waugh, that is certainly what people within the England camp think.

Waugh has been speaking about Miley’s position on the latest episode of Pod On The Tyne.

“In terms of Lewis Miley, you can see why, long-term, some people in the England setup think that number six could be his position,” he said.

“He seems to have a bit of everything to be able to play there.”

He looks comfortable there for Newcastle United

Miley was outstanding as the ‘six’ on Saturday. He won so many tackles, while he used the ball brilliantly. There was one pass in the first half to set Harvey Barnes away that was exquisite.

Obviously, he still has a lot to learn to fully thrive in that position, but the early signs are promising. He has got the right physical stature, while we know how good he is on the ball and ensuring it advances up the pitch.

It is food for thought for Eddie Howe, who has got plenty of midfield conundrums. Right now he is struggling for options, while Bruno Guimaraes wants to play higher up the pitch.
