Newcastle United looked solid enough against Aston Villa in their first game of the new Premier League season but attention now turns to Monday’s huge clash against Liverpool.
Newcastle drew 0-0 with Aston Villa only a few hours after Premier League champions Liverpool beat Bournemouth 4-2 on Friday night.
After a difficult summer dominated by Liverpool’s ongoing interest in Alexander Isak, it was promising to see Newcastle put in a strong performance.
Eddie Howe’s side really should have won at Villa Park but there were certainly positives to take into Monday night’s huge game at St James’ Park when Arne Slot’s side come to town.
Newcastle, of course, beat Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final back in March. Still, they generally have a dreadful record against the Reds, who have made life very difficult for the Magpies this summer.

They successfully hijacked Newcastle’s move for Hugo Ekitike and remain keen on Isak, who no longer wants to play for the club he’s contracted to for another three years.
Under the lights on Tyneside, it’s going to be quite the spectacle. Here’s what Howe and some of the Newcastle players are saying about it.

Eddie Howe sends message to Liverpool ahead of Newcastle United trip
After the Villa game, Howe was asked by TNT Sports about it being a “spicy” fixture given all that has happened off the pitch this summer.
In response, the Newcastle United manager said: “It’s always spicy against Liverpool, there’s a history to the fixture. Newcastle vs Liverpool has been an unbelievable fixture over the Premier League years. We look forward to it, we respect them and we know how good they are.”
Speaking to the same broadcaster, Anthony Gordon – who almost joined boyhood club Liverpool in 2024 – said: “With everything that has gone on, I’m sure the atmosphere is going to be a bit wild.”
Dan Burn, meanwhile, added when asked by TNT Sports: “Yeah, probably [about the game being “spicy”].
“Obviously we beat Liverpool in the final but apart from that we’ve never beaten them in the league [under Eddie Howe].
“It’s something we want to do and I think probably with everything that may have gone on this off-season, it’s going to make it a good game.”
How Newcastle United feel about Liverpool now
Newcastle were baffled by Liverpool’s first bid for Isak, given it was well below their valuation of the Sweden striker.
Alan Shearer has criticised Liverpool too, suggesting the opening offer was “belittling” to Newcastle.
Indeed, it has also been claimed that Newcastle have blocked Isak’s move to Liverpool.
It remains to be seen what happens. It seems unlikely the Sweden star will play in the fixture for either team but he will almost certainly be the major point of discussion.
Newcastle United vs Liverpool is one of the Premier League’s most iconic fixtures as it is. Monday’s game, however, brings it to a whole new level.
