What Eddie Howe and Jason Tindall's relationship is actually like at Newcastle

Jason Tindall has played something of a leading role in Newcastle United’s best season for years.

An internet celebrity recently for his supposed eye for the camera, Tindall and Eddie Howe are to thank for a domestic cup final and Champions League qualification in the first season of the PIF era.

Howe has talked up his Newcastle assistant even after he hit headlines and, for supporters, Tindall has emerged as something of a cult-hero.

Exactly the kind of figure many would want on their side, more insight into how the dynamic between manager and assistant works has now emerged.

Indeed, The Daily Telegraph have offered a look behind the curtain.

They have claimed that despite spending pretty much all of their playing and coaching careers together, Howe and Tindall aren’t particularly close off the field.

It is suggested that the pair never socialise outside of work and even claimed they don’t particularly like each other. Known to bicker and argue at the training ground, they are not believed to be friends as such.

Still, it is a partnership that works and the fact Howe couldn’t take Tindall with him to Celtic in 2021 was understood to have been part of the reason he rejected the move.

Why change a winning formula?

Given how much time the two have spent together in a working capacity over the years, that is certainly surprising to hear.

However, while it jars to imagine them not particularly getting on, it obviously makes little difference to their ability to work.

Having taken Bournemouth through the leagues before embarking on what has been a fantastic journey – with plenty of distance still to run – at Newcastle, there’s no need to change a winning formula.

If it works, let’s hope it doesn’t suddenly change for a while yet.
