Newcastle United recently announced the appointment of David Hopkinson as the club’s new chief executive officer.

It was a long time coming, but the Magpies have finally got a new chief on board to replace Darren Eales.

After reports that his arrival was imminent, Newcastle United have officially confirmed the arrival of David Hopkinson as CEO. Eales departs Newcastle following a blood cancer diagnosis in 2024, but has been working his notice until a successor was found. The 52-year-old has since departed and given his well wishes to his successor.

Hopkinson joins Newcastle with a great CV, having worked for Real Madrid and, most recently, the Madison Square Garden group, where he oversaw several different businesses and sports teams.

With the CEO ready to make an impact on Tyneside, a new report has shared what those close to him have said about the move.

David Hopkinson ready to make magic at Newcastle United

There is no doubt that the 54-year-old is joining a club with bags of potential, and one in the middle of a big transition period. An announcement on the future of St James’ Park is set to be made any day now, while the club are working tirelessly behind the scenes to grow commercially.

Chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan is delighted with Hopkinson’s move to Newcastle, who has over 25 years’ experience in growing top brands.

In a new report from The Athletic, friends of Hopkinson have said that he believes Newcastle is ‘the best and most exciting place to work in global sports right now’.

Additionally, they say he feels there is ‘magic to be made’ on Tyneside – something fans will be delighted to hear.

Elsewhere, the report states that Hopkinson has already spoken to leading figures at Newcastle, including Eddie Howe, to gain a better understanding of what is needed.

David Hopkinson provides clear plan for Newcastle United

Hopkinson is an appointment which can take Newcastle to the next level; an experienced head who has worked for some of the biggest and best brands in the world.

The Canadian has experience in securing big money deals for his previous businesses, including an $800m+ (£593m+) naming rights deal for the Scotiabank arena in Toronto.

Since his appointment, Hopkinson has updated his bio on LinkedIn and provided a small insight into what he will be doing on Tyneside.

“I am currently Chief Executive Officer of Newcastle United Football Club,” he said.

“Leading one of the game’s most ambitious ownership groups and stewarding a proud one-club city toward its rightful place among Europe’s elite.

“My mandate is clear: build a high-performance culture, unlock under-realised commercial potential, and position Newcastle United as a Champions League club in every sense—on the pitch and off it.”

With Ross Wilson expected to join Newcastle as sporting director, the Magpies are certainly on to a winner going forward.
