What Dan Ashworth just saw Newcastle United star Tino Livramento do for the England U21s

Newcastle United star Tino Livramento was back in action for the England U21s on Sunday evening and had Dan Ashworth watching on.

The Newcastle United defender is one of the most high-profile players in the squad as Lee Carsley’s Young Lions look to defend the European Championship title they won in 2023, with Anthony Gordon in the side back then.

Livramento should arguably have been in the senior England side, having shone for Newcastle so much during the 2024/25 season.

Still, England manager Thomas Tuchel rates Livramento highly and the player has embraced the challenge of playing for the U21s.

Livramento was brilliant for England against Czechia earlier this week and was again in action on Sunday as Carsley’s side drew 0-0 with Slovenia in their second group game.

Here’s how he performed.

It was a frustrating evening for England. Despite dominating possession, they couldn’t find a way through and they may now have to beat Germany in their final group game to progress into the knockout stages.

Former Newcastle sporting director Ashworth was in attendance, having last month re-joined The FA as their Chief Football Officer.

Livramento was deployed as a left-back. According to FotMob data, he had 82 touches, created two chances and found the mark with 97% of his 74 attempted passes.

He also recovered the ball nine times and did not lose it once.

Tino Livramento has made Paul Mitchell look very foolish at Newcastle United

Paul Mitchell replaced Ashworth as Newcastle sporting director last year but he hasn’t lasted long in the role.

Newcastle have confirmed Mitchell will leave at the end of June, bringing an end to a perplexing short time at St James’ Park.

Indeed, Mitchell thinks Newcastle paid too much money for Livramento, which looks a baffling conclusion to come to.

At 22, he’s already one of the best full-backs in the Premier League and looks set for a bright future on the international stage.

Livramento cost Newcastle £32million and that now looks like a bargain if anything.
