Thomas Tuchel has ‘unwavering’ support for Newcastle United star; they’ve spoken in private

Thomas Tuchel surprisingly snubbed Newcastle United star Tino Livramento from his most recent England senior squad.

Despite being a key player for Newcastle United during their most remarkable campaign in modern history, Livramento was overlooked by Tuchel in the England squad for their games against Andorra and Senegal.

Tuchel told Livramento to take “responsibility” for the England U21s during this summer’s European Championship for their age group, and it’s fair to say the 22-year-old has started to do that.

Indeed, Livramento was brilliant for the England U21s against Czechia and, frankly, looks a level above U21 international football.

Given Kyle Walker’s struggles for the Three Lions, there have been questions as to why Livramento isn’t in the senior side. Still, Tuchel’s thoughts on the player have emerged.

Thomas Tuchel really likes working with Tino Livramento

According to The Daily Mail, Tuchel told Livramento that the left-back spot was up for grabs in the England squad.

Lewis Hall and Myles Lewis-Skelly are other options, though are slightly behind Livramento in experience. Luke Shaw has been a long-serving player for England, though has consistently struggled with injury.

Despite the fact he wasn’t in the most recent England squad, the former Chelsea manager really values the Newcastle star. Livramento has the “unwavering backing” of both the German and England U21 manager Lee Carsley.

“Thomas spoke to me about the senior squad and I spoke to Lee as well about the role coming here,” said Livramento.

“I haven’t played at a tournament for England at any age group, I’ve always missed it through injury, so I think that’s a big thing for me.’

Theo Walcott, meanwhile, has again compared his former Southampton teammate to a young Gareth Bale.

He told The Mail: “He’s kind of a right-footed Gareth Bale in stature and the way he runs and I feel like he’d be the perfect wing-back for me.

“He is a potential [England] future captain, just because of his presence and how he is around the place.”

Ashley Cole delivers expert insight into Newcastle United star Tino Livramento

When Hall returns to full fitness, the expectation will be that Livramento returns to right-back at club level.

Still, it seems playing on the left looks more likely with England.

With that in mind, it’s interesting to hear what Ashley Cole thinks of the player. Former Chelsea and Arsenal defender Cole is regarded as perhaps England’s greatest left-back in history, so speaks with authority.

Cole thinks Livramento has a “beautiful future” in the game, having been impressed by how he’s stepped up after joining Newcastle in 2023.

“I had the fortune to be around him when he was at Chelsea. He was in the 21s in the reserve group,” he said.

“You always see the passion and level he could get to. But there’s only a certain level of information we can give him. It’s down to the players to take on that information, absorb it, and want to learn and listen and develop and get better. He’s certainly one of those players.”

Livramento does not want to leave Newcastle despite links with a move to Manchester City. That beautiful future Cole talks about looks like it will be spent on Tyneside.
