What Amanda Staveley told PIF about Eddie Howe before she left Newcastle

It has been a strange summer for Newcastle United thus far.

Eddie Howe has been linked with a move away from Newcastle this summer after Gareth Southgate confirmed he would be leaving England following the Euro 2024 final defeat, while there have already been changes higher up at St James’ Park.

Indeed, Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi have departed, with PIF increasing their controlling stake in the club.

While their departure was always likely, Howe is believed to have been hit hard by the news two of his more vocal supporters are no longer involved at the club.

Though there’s no suggestion that the Newcastle boss is under any immediate pressure, there have previously been reports claiming that no one really knows how chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan feels about Howe.

Now, some insight into Staveley’s parting message about Howe has emerged.

What Amanda Staveley told PIF about Eddie Howe before leaving Newcastle

According to The Chronicle, Staveley urged PIF to give Howe some significant backing this summer in order to get his team back into the Champions League.

They also add that Howe will likely be granted funds to make two exciting signings during the transfer window, as well as potentially some added squad cover.

With that in mind, it seems decision-makers are heeding her advice.

Eddie Howe already knows he’s under pressure at Newcastle

Any job towards the top end of the Premier League is always going to have pressure attached to it. There’s simply no getting away from that.

Still, the shifting sands at Newcastle do put Howe in an interesting position – especially with the England job up for grabs.

While its hugely unlikely to imagine Howe leaving Newcastle without either the FA stumping up cash or PIF sacking him, it is interesting to note that the 46-year-old has already held talks with the owners about his standing.

Indeed, HITC Football insider Graeme Bailey recently told Geordie Boot Boys that PIF have told Howe that last season was not good enough and that there must be an improvement.

“My understanding is that PIF have made it known to Howe that last season was not good enough, but they haven’t read out the riot act so to speak,” he said.
