Newcastle United signed Bruno Guimaraes in January 2022, and they had some help from Arsenal and Liverpool players.
Bruno joined Newcastle at the start of last year for £35million, in a transfer that was a huge risk. He was a Champions League calibre player joining a team that was battling against relegation.
It was a brave move from the Brazilian, but one that is now massively paying off. Bruno is adored on Tyneside, and has played a key role in what is proving to be a fantastic season. Without him, we wouldn’t have reached the Carabao Cup final or be challenging for Europe.
The 25-year-old has also received personal honours, and was recently named the North East Player Of The Year for 2022.
After receiving the accolade, Bruno spoke to the Athletic. He discussed his move to Newcastle, and detailed how Premier League stars Ederson, Alisson and Gabriel Jesus helped him decide to move to St James’ Park.

How Gabriel Jesus and Alisson helped convince Bruno to sign for Newcastle
The Athletic’s interview with Bruno was featured on the latest episode of Pod On The Tyne, with the midfielder explaining how he was with the Brazil national team when he first spoke to the Toon owners about signing for Newcastle.
“When I spoke with the owners for the first time, I was with the national team,” Bruno said.
“I spoke with Alisson, Ederson, Gabriel Jesus and they told me that it is an annoying place to play, St James’ Park is the most difficult place to play away.”
‘Annoying’ St James’ Park helped convince Bruno
Thank goodness the likes of Jesus and Alisson spoke so highly of Newcastle United – sort of. Obviously saying St James’ Park is an annoying place isn’t a major compliment, but it’s what you want to hear from opposition players.
Toon fans create an atmosphere that is difficult for travelling players to perform in, and it is part of the reason why Bruno is now a Geordie.
Alisson and Jesus’ experiences on Tyneside helped Bruno decide that Newcastle was the place for him, and he has since played in some incredible atmospheres at St James’ Park. He has built a real connection with the supporters, and continues to express his love for the region as well as the club.
Thank goodness he made the move last year. He is going to be a huge part of our future, and we can partially thank Jesus, Alisson and Ederson for that.
