Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe is very happy with how one of his recently injured players has trained this week.

Callum Wilson made his Toon return last weekend, coming off the bench to play 45 minutes of the 4-4 draw with Luton Town.

The 31-year-old was unable to find the net, but certainly gave Newcastle a lift when he came on. His return to fitness has coincided with Alexander Isak picking up an injury, so it is excellent to hear that the Magpies’ number nine is fit and firing again.

With Anthony Gordon set to miss Saturday’s game against Nottingham Forest due to injury, it looks all but certain that Wilson is going to start at the City Ground. If he does, it will be his first start since December 23rd.

Eddie Howe will be hoping that Wilson impresses, having witnessed him enjoy a strong week of training on the back of his return to fitness.

Eddie Howe pleased with Callum Wilson in Newcastle training

Howe has spoke to the media ahead of Nottingham Forest vs Newcastle United, and admitted that Wilson has been excellent in training in the buildup to the game.

Callum has trained well this week,” he said.

“We are really pleased with him.

“I thought he did very well with the 45 minute cameo he got against Luton.”

Newcastle need a fit and focussed Callum Wilson

A fit and focussed Callum Wilson is a dangerous Callum Wilson. We all know what he is capable of when he is at 100%. Sadly, he has not been at that level enough this season. The £20million man has endured multiple injury problems, missing 13 games so far.

But he has still been among the goals, and is Newcastle’s second top scorer with eight. He will be desperate to add to that tally on Saturday, especially in the absence of Isak.

Wilson will be eager to close the gap between himself and top scorer Isak, who has hit the back of the net 14 times this season. He is six clear of Wilson right now.

Hopefully that gap is reduced this weekend, with Toon fans eager to see Wilson fire Newcastle United to victory against Nottingham Forest.
