Newcastle United’s new Mackem Slayer could be back from injury in the next few weeks.

Alexander Isak was one of the Magpies’ heroes in the Tyne-Wear derby last month, scoring twice to help Newcastle advance in the FA Cup.

Since then, the 24-year-old forward has been met with chants of ‘who put the ball in the Mackems net’, but they have been put on hold for now.

That is because the ‘frightening‘ striker is out of action with a groin injury, having been forced off during the 3-1 win over Aston Villa on January 31st.

It was a worrying blow on an otherwise excellent night for the club, and it led to Isak missing Saturday’s 4-4 draw with Luton Town. Eddie Howe has since explained that he thinks the super Swede will miss a couple more games, and now the Chronicle have provided an update on his situation.

Alexander Isak on course to return from injury in February

According to the Chronicle, Isak is still on course to return to action before the end of February. They add that he is making ‘good progress’ on the road to recovery.

The Magpies have four more matches before this month comes to a close, including a crucial FA Cup clash with Blackburn Rovers.

We also have a date at the Emirates Stadium, with Newcastle facing Arsenal on February 24th. That could be the game where Isak makes his return, if Howe’s assessment is correct – but we know fine well that you can’t truly trust the Newcastle manager when it comes to injury updates.

With Isak, who has scored 14 goals this season, out injured, Callum Wilson’s return to fitness is a timely one. He came on against Luton at the weekend, and looks likely to start our next game – Nottingham Forest away.
