Wayne Rooney names the only player better than Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak in the Premier League

Alexander Isak has already made his mark on Newcastle United history.

Isak still has plenty to play for this season as Newcastle United look to qualify for the Champions League but his contribution to making club history will never be forgotten.

Indeed, the 25-year-old scored what proved to be the winning goal in the Carabao Cup final last month, ending Newcastle’s 70-year wait for a major domestic honour.

Isak has been hailed as “world class” and there is little disputing that. One of the Premier League’s top scorers this season, the Sweden international only looks to be getting better and better.

Still, pundit Wayne Rooney believes there’s still one player better than him in England’s elite division right now.

Wayne Rooney ranks Premier League players – including Newcastle’s Alexander Isak

The former England captain was asked by Amazon Prime to name his top five players in the Premier League this season.

In fifth, he chose Red Devils captain Bruno Fernandes. Nottingham Forest star Morgan Gibbs-White came fourth, with Cole Palmer third.

Rooney opted for Isak in second saying: “In second place, I’ll go with Isak from Newcastle. His all-round play, his goals, obviously he scored a goal in the final as well, so he’d be my number two pick.”

Unsurprisingly, Mohamed Salah was first in Rooney’s rankings.

Liverpool star Salah is of course about to win the Premier League title and is the only player to have outscored Isak this season (21 to 27).

Newcastle United stopped Mohamed Salah from having an even better season

Finishing second to Salah is no great shame. The Egyptian has enjoyed a remarkable campaign and will rightly get plenty of plaudits for it.

Still, Newcastle did stop him from enjoying an even more memorable season.

Eddie Howe’s side beat Liverpool to win the Carabao Cup at Wembley of course, with the Reds forward enduring a difficult day up against Tino Livramento.

In fact, Livramento stopped Salah registering a shot or a key pass, something he hadn’t done in 392 games for Liverpool up until that point.
