Video: Harvey Barnes’ applauded after what he did in Newcastle training yesterday

Newcastle United fans are very excited to see Harvey Barnes in action, and they are not going to have to wait much longer.

The 25-year-old is going to make his St James’ Park debut this weekend, as the Magpies prepare to face Fiorentina and Villarreal in the Sela Cup. Then after that it is the final countdown for the new Premier League season starting.

Eddie Howe’s side face Aston Villa on August 12th, with Barnes looking to force his way into the Toon starting XI for the season opener.

That will be easier said than done, with Anthony Gordon looking like the current favourite to start on the left wing next week.

All Barnes can do is impress this weekend and continue to apply himself in training, and that is something he has certainly done this week.

Ahead of the Sela Cup contests at St James’ Park this weekend, the club have released a video of the players preparing at the training ground.

It is a great insight into what is going on behind the scenes at Newcastle, and we discovered that Sandro Tonali has already been given a nickname by his teammates – he’s now being called ‘Sandy’. Genius.

The video on the club’s official YouTube channel sees Howe getting his attacking players to do a shooting drill, as they look to sharpen their skills ahead of competitive football returning.

At 3:29, we see something special from Barnes. He gets the ball inside the box on the left, and curls a wonderful effort with his right foot beyond the goalkeeper. It leads to applause from the coaches, while someone shouts ‘brilliant Barnesy’ – which is another new nickname.

It is an excellent strike from Barnes, who has shown what he can do when not under pressure. The real test will be doing it in a match, with Newcastle hoping that the 25-year-old will add goals to Howe’s side.

Coming in off the left and scoring with his right was his trademark at Leicester, and it is a big reason why Newcastle have spent £38million on him.

They will hope that he brings his party trick to Tyneside, and it certainly looks like he is practicing it in training.
