‘Unbelievable’: Callum Wilson was absolutely stunned by £64m player on Sunday

Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson was devastated to lose on Sunday, but has took time to heap praise on one Liverpool player.

The Toon number nine could not help but be impressed with Darwin Nunez, who silenced St James’ Park with two goals in the second half.

It looked for all the world that Newcastle were going to end their rotten run against Liverpool. Anthony Gordon had put the Magpies 1-0 up, while the Reds were down to 10 men after Virgil van Dijk’s red card.

But Eddie Howe’s side failed to kill off the game and were punished, with Nunez coming off the bench to turn the game on its head in dramatic fashion.

His two goals were really impressive, and while they left Wilson gutted, he simply had to heap praise on the Uruguayan striker.

Callum Wilson blown away by Darwin Nunez goals

Wilson has appeared on the latest episode of the Footballer’s Football podcast. He admitted that he was stunned by what Nunez did on Sunday afternoon.

“Nunez come on, he’s had a lot of stick since he joined the club,” he said.

“Two unbelievable finishes. I don’t think the first one he could hit again. I don’t think many people could hit that every single time as sweet as that. Post and in.

“When you’re a striker, sometimes it’s good not to think. When you don’t have enough time to think and it’s instinctive, that’s when you produce some of your best finishes. He’s touched it, hit it and credit to him. It was a great finish to our disappointment.”

That is why Newcastle wanted to sign him

As Wilson said, Nunez got a fair bit of stick after his debut year at Anfield. He cost Liverpool an initial £64million, but struggled to live up to that price tag.

However, the potential was there for all to see, and it looks like he is going to have a much more impressive 2023/24 campaign.

He seems to love scoring at St James’ Park. The 24-year-old already has three goals in two appearances.

The forward has excelled against the Magpies, who he actually could have joined last year. Before his move to Liverpool, Newcastle were very eager to bring him to the North East.

However, Howe was unable to tempt Nunez to Tyneside, as he wanted to join a club that was competing in Europe. While we are set to do that now, that was not the case 12 months ago.

Newcastle had their eyes on him but he was simply too ambitious a target at the time, and now he is scoring against the Magpies rather than for them. His two goals on Sunday were really impressive, and will sting for a long time given the circumstances.
