Newcastle United’s transfer window was appalling.
Failure to significantly strengthen the squad during the Mike Ashley years at Newcastle was hardly unexpected but not doing so under the PIF regime is a bitter disappointment.
There are of course mitigating circumstances, such as spending being down across the Premier League this summer, but it doesn’t make it an easier pill to swallow.
Though those behind the scenes at St James’ Park are reportedly stressing that they remain ambitious, it is surely the first window of PIF’s ownership thus far that requires questioning.
In fact, it was so bad that club legend Alan Shearer slammed the club for failing to back manager Eddie Howe.
It was a difficult start to life in the role for sporting director Paul Mitchell and pundit Troy Deeney has given his opinion on the window.
Troy Deeney thinks trouble is now brewing at Newcastle
When predicting what would happen between Newcastle and Tottenham on Sunday, Deeney claimed that there is “trouble brewing” at the club, following Mitchell’s failure to strengthen Howe’s squad this summer.

“Newcastle have been all over the place,” he told a video posted on TikTok.
“There’s trouble brewing with Eddie Howe and the Director of Football because they brought in Lloyd Kelly, and that’s it. He was on a free. Eddie could have done that by sending a text message, so the Director of Football is under a bit of pressure there. I am going to say it’s going to be a good game, 3-2 Spurs.”
What Paul Mitchell was said to have been concerned about this summer
Obviously, no one really knows the dynamic between Howe and Mitchell, only that the latter was appointed without the former’s knowledge.
While Howe has previously spoken positively about the sporting director, Mitchell is thought to have had concerns this summer.
Indeed, it has been claimed that Mitchell had misgivings about Howe’s view that only Marc Guehi would seriously improve his central defence this summer, with Mitchell reportedly keen to source alternative targets in case a deal could not be done.
Obviously, we remain at an early stage of their working relationship and disagreements are not necessarily a bad thing but there has clearly been a change in dynamic this summer compared to last.
It will be fascinating to see how things develop from here.
