Troy Deeney makes staggering Eddie Howe sack claim as he hails Newcastle United boss

Eddie Howe has cemented his legacy at Newcastle United.

Just like the Newcastle United owners, Eddie Howe had big ambitions when he arrived at St James’ Park.

He has been desperate for success ever since his appointment as Newcastle United manager, and now he has established himself as a Toon legend. He has eclipsed the likes of Sir Bobby Robson and Kevin Keegan, ending the Magpies’ trophy drought by bringing the Carabao Cup back to Tyneside.

Alan Shearer thinks Eddie Howe deserves a statue, but that will not happen for many years.

In the meantime, Troy Deeney believes that Eddie Howe deserves the honour of being named manager of the season.

Troy Deeney’s strange praise for Eddie Howe

That is the view of the former Watford striker, who has produced his Premier League team of the season so far for TalkSPORT.

His side included one Newcastle United player, with Alexander Isak getting the nod up front.

Deeney also had to include a manager, and he went with the man who guided the Magpies to Carabao Cup glory.

“I think the pressure and expectation on Eddie, what he’s had to deal with with the England stuff circling around him, winning the first trophy, but also at times looking like he could get sacked at any moment,” he said.

“I think that’s more pressure than Nuno, who’s having one of those seasons where they’ve just blown everybody out of the water. There’s a lot of people who thought they (Forest) were going to get relegated.”

PIF are completely behind Eddie Howe

While Newcastle United have been inconsistent throughout the 2024/25 season, there has not been any moment when Eddie Howe’s job has actually been at risk.

There has been the odd murmur of discontent on social media, but that is not a barometer for reality.

It was reported in March that Toon chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan is very happy with Eddie Howe, with the PIF chief still believing that he will be Newcastle’s long-term manager at St James’ Park. And this was before Howe’s win at Wembley!

He had the support of the owners before the Carabao Cup final, and that support will only have intensified after what happened on March 16th.

While Deeney’s quip about Howe looking likely to get the sack is strange, his praise of the Newcastle United manager is fair.

At the start of the season, there was discontent behind the scenes following Paul Mitchell’s arrival, while he was handling a squad that had not been strengthened in the transfer market. All the while, there was speculation that he could become the England boss.

But Howe has navigated all of those distractions to win the first major trophy of his career. He certainly is a candidate to be named manager of the year, and his claim will grow stronger if Newcastle qualify for the Champions League.
