Alan Shearer had the honour of speaking to the Newcastle United players before they took to the stage at the Town Moor on Saturday.

It was a whirlwind day for the Newcastle United squad, who were paraded through the streets in front of 200,000 supporters before hitting the Town Moor.

It was a black and white party, as Newcastle celebrated winning the Carabao Cup.

The amount of people there to toast this Newcastle United team was incredible, and it is fair to say that the players were blown away by what they saw on Saturday.

Newcastle United players blown away by Carabao Cup celebrations

That is according to Alan Shearer, who was asked by Gary Lineker on The Rest Is Football podcast if he spoke to any of the players during Saturday’s celebrations.

“Yeah, the players came in into the VIP tent just before they went on stage,” he said.

“Every single one was talking how much it was like a wow moment when they got on the bus.

“They were all saying how they expected thousands and thousands to be there, but they probably didn’t expect it to be as passionate and as loud and as noisy and as many people that were lining the streets right throughout the city.

“They just absolutely loved it.”

Alan Shearer’s Champions League hope for Newcastle

The Toon players absolutely loved Saturday, but now they must finally turn their attention back to playing football.

The Newcastle players were banned from drinking alcohol during the Carabao Cup celebrations, with Eddie Howe’s players in action on Wednesday night.

They face Brentford at St James’ Park, as Newcastle get set for a massive final 10 games of the season.

Champions League qualification is in Newcastle’s hands, and Shearer is hoping that this wave of momentum will carry them back into Europe’s elite competition.

“I think they’ve got a really good chance now because the feeling and the belief and everything, I hope, that carries them through to the end of the season and hopefully get into Champions League football,” he said.

Confidence should be sky high after winning the Carabao Cup. On top of that, the atmosphere inside St James’ Park on Wednesday night should be electric.

That is quite the combination, and should hopefully inspire a great performance from Eddie Howe’s players.

Their fate is in their own hands. While winning a trophy was the most important thing for supporters, it is vital for the club that they return to the Champions League.

After winning the Carabao Cup, Shearer believes that Champions League qualification can follow.
