Gabri Veiga has hit headlines before the transfer window officially opens.
The Celta Vigo midfielder has been strongly linked with Newcastle for a while and recent reports suggested they close were completing a deal.
Marca had claimed Eddie Howe’s side were the closest to signing the attacking midfielder.
While the likes of Fabrizio Romano pulled back on that somewhat, the links continue.
Indeed, according to The Daily Mail, things could end up moving rather quickly after all.
Newcastle could sign Gabri Veiga in the coming days
They claim that while an offer has not yet been made, Newcastle retain an interest in Veiga.
In fact, the report adds, the deal could be done in “in the coming days”.
Manchester City and Real Madrid have previously been reported to have been keen on the 21-year-old.
Currently, Veiga is believed to have a release clause worth around £35m included in his contract and Celta have been unable to get him to sign a new deal.

Named La Liga’s Player of the Month in February, Veiga is a product of Celta’s academy. After impressing in the youth ranks, this season has seen him hit new heights.
After scoring a 30-yard screamer against Real Betis in October, the youngster started to appear in the first-team more often and attention started to come.
A scouting report from Goal describes the player as “an excellent dribbler” and someone who “uses his power to work his way out of trouble in crowded spots”, while Sport hailed him as “amazing”.
In fact, in February, Opta stated “Celta de Vigo’s Gabri Veiga is the first midfielder born in 2002 or before to have been involved in 10+ goals in the Top 5 European Leagues this season (seven goals and three assists).”
A young player being tracked by Europe’s elite, the idea of potentially seeing him sign for Newcastle in the coming days is hugely exciting.
