Deadline day: Why Newcastle may reportedly struggle to sign Jack Hendry

According to the Northern Echo, Newcastle United have enquired about signing Jack Hendry from Oostende on deadline day.

The defender joined the Belgian side permanently this summer, but they could be interested in selling him already.

Hendry only cost Oostende £1.8million, and they would be keen to make an immediate profit.

The 26-year-old, who featured for Scotland at Euro 2020, wouldn’t be an expensive signing. The Daily Mail recently claimed that Oostende only want around £4million.

The Northern Echo have backed up these claims, suggesting they would do a deal for around £3.4million.

However, that’s where the issue lies for Newcastle.

Signing Jack Hendry on deadline day could be difficult for Newcastle

According to the Northern Echo (Live blog, 8.11am), Oostende are only interested in letting Hendry leave permanently.

That’s not good news for Newcastle, with Steve Bruce suggesting last week that the club would only be capable of doing loan deals.

How a Premier League club is so hard up is anyone’s guess, but yet again Mike Ashley is taking a monumental risk with Newcastle United.

Bruce clearly needs reinforcements. While a lot of fans have already turned on the manager, he hasn’t been given any help by Ashley or Lee Charnley this summer.

The Magpies have conceded 10 goals in three Premier League games, and it easily could have been more. It’s obvious that we need a new centre-back – Bruce has seemingly wanted one all summer.

But unless the club find some cash from somewhere, it seems like a deal for Hendry isn’t on the cards.

At £4million he’d be a bargain. And with time running out, we’ll take anyone we can get right now. Otherwise an ugly start to the season could get even worse.
