Newcastle United are apparently unlikely to do any more business in the summer transfer window.
That is the claim from Telegraph journalist Luke Edwards today.
The Magpies have only brought in Joe Willock so far.
The midfielder has come back to St. James’ Park in a permanent transfer from Arsenal after a very successful loan stint last term.
That supposedly cost the club around £25 million all-in (Sky Sports) – and it seems that deal might have left Newcastle struggling to sign anyone else.
Tweeting this morning, Edwards said: “It would appear unlikely #nufc will make any more signings as it would mean leaving someone out of 25-man squad and they have basically spent budget on Willock.
“One loan possibly if something attractive comes up but effectively they’ve not improved squad from end of last season.”
The idea of Newcastle not bringing anyone else in is very worrying indeed.
The club have lost their first two Premier League games and have shipped six goals.
The defence is clearly in need of some attention, and another midfielder wouldn’t go amiss.
But it seems Toon fans might be set for disappointment.
On social media, some supporters have been expressing their dismay following Edwards’ update:
Year 3 of Brucieball looks promising.

God help us, that defence is shocking.

Thanks for the cheer up Luke made my day #NUFC

Ashley doesn’t care. We’ll either stay up at minimal cost or we’ll go down and the takeover can then bypass the PL, assuming the buyer is still interested.

Completely negligent really. Glaringly obvious where that team needs improving after watching the first two games. A CB with pace who can pass, two new Wing Backs and an upgrade on Hayden for starters. Scary that the owner/chief exec can’t see it.

How has Lee Charney had a free pass again this summer? He’s had a stellar pay rise and yet once again he has slipped under the radar and produced very little. The bloke appears immune to questioning. The neglect is astonishing even by our standards #nufc

Imagine just having a club that wants to improve and wants to challenge maybe one day
