Transfer deadline day: How many more signings Newcastle will make

It looks like as many as three new players will join Newcastle United on transfer deadline day.

Deals are in place for Dan Burn and Matt Targett, who are in the North East to complete their medicals. Meanwhile, a fee has reportedly been agreed for 19-year-old forward Hugo Ekitike.

That deal could be trickier, as the player obviously has to travel from France. Newcastle have until 11pm tonight to complete the signing of the Ligue 1 youngster.

Other deals have been touted, with speculation at the start of the day that Jesse Lingard could still join the Magpies. The Athletic reported that the midfielder was going to make one last push to hopefully force through a move to St James’ Park.

However, that doesn’t look likely at this stage.

Newcastle almost finished their January business

According to the Athletic, the arrivals of Burn, Targett and Ekitike should signal the end of the club’s incoming January transfer business.

They report that ‘senior sources’ expect the trio to be the final arrivals at Newcastle this month. That would suggest a deal for Lingard is unlikely.

It would mean we end the month with six new faces, assuming we complete the deadline day hat-trick of signings.

If we complete the trio of deals, Eddie Howe will have strengthened his squad in multiple areas. We will also have added Premier League experience, which is something the manager craved.

Only Bruno Guimaraes and Hugo Ekitike haven’t played in England before. But the others all know what it takes to be a success in the Premier League.

With all the excitement of the January window, these six signings have to represent a strong month. The new owners have put their money where their mouth is, and brought in the necessary recruits.

All we’re waiting for now is official confirmation of the deadline day deals. And if that is the end of our incomings, attentions will then turn to the outgoings.

With as many as six new faces joining this month, Newcastle need to balance the squad and move some players on.
