Former Newcastle United goalkeeper Shaka Hislop has been granted the Freedom of the City of Newcastle, as per BBC.
It is in recognition for his dedication to North East-based anti-racism charity, Show Racism the Red Card.
The Toon legend has reacted to the news he has been handed the city’s highest honour with a short video on Twitter.

“It is still an incredible honour to even be nominated for the Freedom of the City award,” he said.
“Just sitting there contemplating that, I realise that there are so many people I have to thank, starting with Newcastle United for giving me the chance to play football at the highest level and live out by boyhood dreams.
“As well the support that they gave me and the rest of the Newcastle dressing room and we worked to shape Show Racism the Red Card.”

It would be an immense honour if Hislop were to be awarded the status, but as he said, even being nominated for it is a huge achievement.
It shows his ties with the city and the club he joined in 1995 and how they still endure today with the work he is trying to do in the area.
Hislop is now a pundit with ESPN FC TV and will likely be enjoying Newcastle’s recent on-pitch resurgence under Eddie Howe.
