Newcastle United look to be closing in on the signing of Tino Livramento.

The Southampton defender has been a target for Newcastle this summer amid an acceptance behind the scenes that Kieran Trippier cannot play every game with an increased schedule next season.

Livramento is certainly highly-rated and, at 20 years of age, represents a long-term investment for the club.

While its promising to see a player Eddie Howe wants get close to joining, it would leave another player in an interesting position.

Indeed, January signing Harrison Ashby could be left somewhat in the lurch.

According to The Northern Echo, the former West Ham youngster could now be set to depart on loan.

With Kieran Trippier and potentially Livramento offering competition at right-back, the 21-year-old may be farmed out on a temporary basis in order to aid his development.

Ashby scored the winner against Rangers in a pre-season friendly win earlier this week and has travelled to America in the Premier League Summer Series, although his future is far from certain as things stand.

Disappointing but perhaps necessary for Ashby

Clearly, Ashby would have had aims of breaking into the first-team next season, particularly with an increase in Trippier’s workload.

Still, to have moved in on a deal to sign Livramento does suggest Howe was not happy with his options behind the England international.

As such, and while a little jarring after only six months and no competitive appearances, it could be wise for the Scotland U21 international to go out and get some experience.

For the club too, it makes sense.

Were Livramento to establish himself, putting Ashby in the shop window could hardly be considered a bad thing, with his age offering potential resale value.
