A former Newcastle United goalkeeper, who left the club five years ago, says he has always thought he would return to St James’ Park before the end of his career.

Tim Krul is currently at Championship side Norwich City, where he is battling with Angus Gunn for the regular starting spot at Carrow Road.

He joined the Norfolk side after a brief stint at Brighton, which followed a 12-year stint on Tyneside.

This summer, Krul was briefly linked with a move to Manchester United, where he would replace Dean Henderson as David De Gea’s back-up option.

However, Newcastle United’s own Martin Dubravka ended up filling that role, the 33-year-old heading to Old Trafford on loan.

Tim Krul ‘always’ considered a Newcastle United return

But speaking in the Norwich City programme, as reported by the Eastern Daily Press, Krul has announced his desire to see out his career with Norwich – despite a previous desire to return to Tyneside.

“I always thought I’d move back to Newcastle because my wife is from there but it’s safe to say we like it here a lot,” said Krul.

“You never know in football because anything can happen on a daily basis, but after my career, we will definitely settle here.”

Krul joined Newcastle United from ADO Den Haag in 2005. The now 34-year-old was handed his debut by the late Glenn Roeder in a UEFA Cup match v Palermo back in 2006 and went on to play 184 games for the Magpies.

Hearing that the 2014 World Cup hero always considered a return to Newcastle United will come as no surprise to Toon fans.

Why did the Dutchman leave Newcastle United?

Speaking in 2019, Krul told the Chronicle he never wanted to leave St James’ Park, however, Rafa Benitez decided he wanted his own goalkeeper upon arriving at Tyneside – eventually buying Matz Sels.

Krul still maintains a good relationship with the Toon Army and hearing he still has such a fond connection to the club will leave Newcastle fans appreciative. However, with Nick Pope now looking like a long-term option between the sticks, and Krul happy in Norfolk, it seems a reunion is unlikely.
