While Newcastle United have a lot of players doing the business at the moment, it would be some ask for any of them to get to Alan Shearer’s level at the club.

The idea of Shearer spearheading this Newcastle team with these ambitious owners is a truly exciting one, albeit in a different reality.

Newcastle’s greatest ever player and someone who rejected perhaps more trophy-laden clubs out of loyalty, he is arguably the best forward in Premier League history.

From a Geordie perspective, it’s an almost certainty. Still, Thierry Henry is perhaps one of few players who could rival Shearer for that moniker.

Now, the Arsenal legend has opened up on what he could not understand about Shearer.

Thierry Henry now shares what shocked him about Alan Shearer

Indeed, speaking on The Rest is Football Podcast, Henry admitted he could not believe Shearer stayed at Newcastle for so long despite the club’s wider struggles.

“The big Alan Shearer didn’t leave Newcastle, which I couldn’t understand. I’ll be honest, I couldn’t understand,” he said.

“Because in my mind I was like why is he not challenging himself, why is he not going to try and find out what he could achieve because I was still in my mind of my dad telling me you have to do this, you have to do this.

“I wasn’t playing for my boyhood club so I can’t understand but now I think it’s about what you transmit and you how transcend people. I think that is valuable.”

Shearer is a one of a kind

To suggest Shearer is a one of a kind is a rather obvious understatement.

Still, even these days, key players might not stay at St James’ Park for the bulk of their career.

Bruno Guimaraes, after all, is believed to have a release clause in the contract extension he recently penned. Admittedly the Brazilian doesn’t have the emotional connection to the area that Shearer has but there is a notable difference.

That undying loyalty is just rarely seen in the modern game.
