The real reason why Tino Livramento never considered re-joining Chelsea instead of Newcastle

Newcastle United had to fend off interest from Chelsea when they were battling to sign Tino Livramento this summer.

Luckily for the Magpies, the 21-year-old had no interest in returning to Stamford Bridge two years after leaving the Blues.

That allowed Eddie Howe to get his man, with Newcastle agreeing a deal worth £32million to sign Tino Livramento from Southampton.

He became one of the club’s most expensive signings ever, but was merely brought in to be Kieran Trippier’s understudy for now.

However, Livramento is already playing a starring role in black and white, and is enjoying a rich vein of form on the left of defence following Dan Burn’s injury.

The defender is proving to be an exceptional signing, meaning Toon officials will be all the more grateful that he simply had no interest in moving back to Chelsea.

Why Tino Livramento did not want to sign for Chelsea in the summer

According to the Athletic, the reason Livramento did not want to sign for Chelsea in the summer was because of the competition at right-back.

They state that he was never going to compete with Reece James and Malo Gusto for minutes in a Chelsea shirt.

Instead, he headed up north to join Newcastle and serve as deputy to arguably the Premier League’s best right-back.

At the time, you could have argued he was going to struggle for minutes at St James’ Park as well, but there was always a clear plan in place for him to replace Trippier when the time comes.

In truth, he has actually been fortunate to play more than he probably anticipated, while he has seized his opportunities with both hands.

Alternatively, a move to Chelsea would have seen him battle with a 23-year-old Reece James and a 20-year-old Malo Gusto.

When you look at it like that, it is easy to understand why Livramento had no interest in moving back to Chelsea.

He will be glad of that decision now, as he is already having an important role in what is proving to be another exciting season for Newcastle United. And this is only just the beginning for him on Tyneside.
