Newcastle United have had to rely heavily on Callum Wilson as of late, which is always a risk given his injury record.

The 31-year-old returned from a hamstring injury during the 4-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, at a time when Alexander Isak was struggling for sharpness.

The Swede has since suffered a reoccurrence of his groin injury, leaving Callum Wilson as Newcastle’s only fit striker.

He has now started three games in a row for the Magpies, playing 90 minutes on each occasion. Wilson has had to play a lot of football in a short space of time, which is tough for any player.

It is even tougher for a player who is just back from a muscle problem, and it is even tougher again if you are a player with a history of fitness issues.

So Wilson deserves huge credit for this recent run, and Eddie Howe is very happy with the Toon number nine.

Ahead of the game against Luton Town, Howe spoke to the media. He praised Wilson for his fitness levels since returning from injury.

“Callum has come back into the team and done really, really well,” he said.

“In a time when he didn’t have a lot of training before hitting the pitch. His fitness was of the highest level. He’s been able to play 90 minutes and he’s looked strong physically.

“Took his goal really well and led the line like he always does.”

Wilson has scored once since returning from injury, giving Newcastle the lead against Chelsea on Tuesday night. It was a fantastic finish from the striker, who capitalised on two mistakes.

It looked like Wilson’s goal was going to be enough to send the Magpies through to the semi finals of the Carabao Cup, but that did not prove to be the case.

Instead, Newcastle were dumped out of the competition and will be looking to respond against Luton Town this weekend.

It will be another chance for Wilson to add to his tally, with the £20million man boasting eight goals in all competitions so far. He is one behind Isak, who is a doubt for the game at Kenilworth Road.
