The referee appointed to oversee Bournemouth vs Newcastle United once sent off Anthony Gordon in rather bizarre fashion.
Newcastle United are playing away at Bournemouth on Sunday as Eddie Howe’s side look to build on their first win of the Premier League season against Wolves last time out.
Nick Woltemade scored the winner on his debut then and is widely expected to return to the starting line-up on the south coast after he was benched from the start against Barcelona on Thursday.
It’s a big game for Newcastle and a tough one at that. Indeed, Howe hasn’t won a League game against his former club since his appointment as Newcastle United manager in 2021.
Gordon is suspended for the game but, interestingly, he’s also previously been shown a red card by Sunday’s referee in Rob Jones.

Back in March 2024, Newcastle played out a thriller against West Ham at St James’ Park.
A late brace from Harvey Barnes sealed a stunning 4-3 comeback for Newcastle after they fell behind following two Alexander Isak penalties.
Gordon was one of the standout players that day and was duly awarded the Player of the Match Award by TNT Sports co-commentator Lucy Ward.
Jones was the referee that day and gave the England winger his second yellow card of the afternoon after he kicked the ball away in stoppage time.
According to The Sun, that had never happened before at the time.
How many red cards Anthony Gordon has been shown in his career
Gordon infamously missed the 2025 Carabao Cup final for Newcastle as he was suspended, having been sent off in the FA Cup defeat to Brighton a few weeks before.
In total, he has received three red cards during his time on Tyneside.
Next week, however, he will be available again as Newcastle host Bradford in the Carabao Cup before heading down to Arsenal in the Premier League.
