Newcastle United are back in Premier League action on Sunday when they head down to Eddie Howe’s former club Bournemouth.

Worryingly, Newcastle United have never beaten Bournemouth in the Premier League during the Howe era. Still, domestic confidence has been somewhat raised following last week’s win over Wolves.

Nick Woltemade scored on his debut as Newcastle beat Wolves 1-0 to claim their first Premier League win of the season last time out domestically.

On Thursday, Newcastle lost 2-1 to Barcelona in the Champions League, although they played very well against the Spanish champions.

The Cherries, meanwhile, have been in fine form to date. Despite a summer of upheaval, they’ve won their last three Premier League games following a defeat on the opening day at Liverpool.

Lewis Cook is closing in on a return for Bournemouth due to a knee problem sustained during pre-season, although Adam Smith will be missing for a short while yet with a hamstring injury.

Ryan Christie is expected to return following a recent ankle knock and the hosts also hope to recover Bafode Diakite after he missed their win over Brighton. Enes Unal is injured.

Anthony Gordon is suspended for Newcastle, while Yoane Wissa and Jacob Ramsey are injured. Both summer signings are expected to be ruled out until after the international break in October with knee and ankle injuries respectively. 

Fabian Schar will miss Newcastle’s game against Bournemouth with a head injury, although Woltemade is expected to come back in from the start.
