The £105m reason why Newcastle now need to accelerate bid to sign ‘spectacular’ Maximo Perrone

If Newcastle United seriously want to sign Maximo Perrone, they might need to get a move on.

The 19-year-old midfielder has been linked with a move to St James’ Park in recent months, with claims in Argentina stating that the Magpies are willing to pay more than his release clause to secure his signature.

Since then, talk of Perrone signing has gone quiet. He hasn’t been mentioned much by the English media, although the Athletic recently stated that Newcastle have been scouting the Velez Sarsfield teenager.

He would be a great addition to Newcastle, both for the present and the future. He clearly has a lot of potential, and has been described as ‘spectacular‘ by former Manchester United defender Gabriel Heinze.

We recently expressed our desire for Newcastle to accelerate their bid to sign Perrone following the disappointment of Andrey Santos heading to Chelsea. Now Dan Ashworth has another reason to get a move on and bring the youngster to the North East.

Benfica want Newcastle target Maximo Perrone

According to Portuguese outlet Record (as quoted by Sport Witness), Benfica are now interested in signing Perrone. The report states that he has been identified as a possible replacement for Enzo Fernandez.

He is currently one of the hottest prospects in world football, having excelled on route to Argentina winning the World Cup. Fernandez is now a man in demand, with Alan Shearer hoping that he comes to Newcastle.

That isn’t going to happen, but there are plenty of other Premier League clubs interested in the 21-year-old, such as Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United.

But to sign him, it is going to take a huge fee. Benfica reportedly want Fernandez’s release clause paid in full, meaning he will cost £105million.

Given Fernandez’s ability, someone is probably going to pay that amount to get him. That means Benfica will need to find a replacement, and it looks like they have identified one in Perrone.

Therefore, Newcastle need to move quickly if they are serious about buying the South American talent. He sounds like he would be a brilliant addition to Howe’s squad, and the fact that Benfica are keen is a further suggestion of just how good he is. They are very used to selling their star players, yet always have an outstanding replacement lined up.

Perrone could be just that if Fernandez leaves, so Ashworth might need to get a move on if he really wants to bring the deep lying playmaker to St James’ Park.
