Joelinton has sent a message to Newcastle United fans after his goal was not enough to overcome AC Milan in last night’s game.
Joelinton had a brilliant game against the Italians and fired Newcastle into the lead in the first half, but his efforts simply weren’t enough to push his team into the Champions League knockout rounds.
In an interview with NUFCTV, Joelinton wanted to show his appreciation for the supporters on the night and throughout the tournament, and was disappointed not to be able to win the game for them.
Joelinton was Newcastle’s star man last night
Naturally, the incredible finish for Newcastle’s opening goal will grab the headlines as the Brazilian fired it right into the top corner to the elation of the St James’ Park crowd.
But it was everything else that the midfielder did both on and off the ball that made him so effective despite not getting the result that he wanted.
Joelinton was everywhere last night covering every blade of grass and using up any remaining energy he had from the last two games into this special performance.
Newcastle didn’t make it into either the Champions League or the Europa League, but they could exit the tournament with their heads held high after leaving it all in the pitch against Milan.
After the game, Joelinton said: “It means a lot. They saw how hard we try, they gave everything as well. They have been fantastic for us. Every game they support us, this season and last season. Thank you. At the end it’s really disappointed not to get the result they want and give the happiness to them.”
Joelinton is quietly having an impressive season
While he is not the flashiest of passers, the best finisher or even the quickest in the team, Joelinton is an absolute work horse and there is a huge hole left in the side when he’s not playing.
The Brazilian international’s versatility has also been key for Eddie Howe this season and fans will be keen to see his link-up play with Joe Willock down the left-hand side again once the midfielder returns from injury.
As previously mentioned, Joelinton was a nuisance against Milan and was causing the Serie A giants all kinds of problems on the night, often driving with the ball and trying to create something even at the end of the game when it all looked lost.
He’s the type of player who wears his heart on his sleeve and epitomises Newcastle United and its supporters.
