Sven Botman has admitted that his move to Newcastle United is ‘going well’ after the Magpies’ 0-0 draw with Manchester United on Sunday.
The Dutchman put in a wonderful performance at Old Trafford, and was our man of the match. He was exceptional alongside Fabian Schar, who both defended for their lives, particularly in the second half.
Newcastle had to fight to get a point, and showed their battling spirit to extend their unbeaten run to five games.
Eddie Howe’s side are showing real character this season, and that is why they have only lost once. They also have the best defensive record in the league, conceding just nine goals.
Botman is playing well himself, and enjoying an extended run in Howe’s starting XI after an up and down start.
But the 22-year-old appears to be solidifying himself as a top class Premier League defender, and has clearly bought into the team ethos at St James’ Park.
What Botman noticed about Newcastle team after he arrived
After the draw against Man United, Botman spoke to Viaplayy Fotball. He was asked about Newcastle suddenly being hard to beat after years of heavy defeats at grounds like Old Trafford.
“It all starts with a real team feeling,” he said.
“Right from the start when I arrived here, I already felt it. Everyone is working with each other. It’s like a real team and you see it on the pitch. We fight for each other. That’s where it all starts. We see the results and we want to continue like this. It’s going well.”
Botman was then asked about all the running Eddie Howe made the players do in Austria.
He laughed before saying: “Now you see it.”
Botman fitting in well after big money move
There is a clear belief in this Newcastle team. They do not know when they are beaten. Howe’s men are capable of responding to setbacks, and have very rarely capitulated during his tenure.
Particularly this season, the Magpies are tough opponents. We have competed in every game so far, and can perhaps feel unlucky to not have more points on the board.
As for Botman, he is enjoying a strong start to his Newcastle career. He has started the last three games, and was particularly impressive against the Red Devils.
The £35million signing is settling in well with his new team, and clearly knows what is expected of a player in an Eddie Howe team. His players fight for everything and it is the foundation of their performances.
Botman proved he can do just that on Sunday, keeping his footballing hero Cristiano Ronaldo quiet.
