Sven Botman returned to action for the Newcastle Under-21 side last night against Chelsea.

Newcastle United have struggled defensively at times over the past month, conceding 10 goals in five games, which has caused a slight wobble.

Sven Botman‘s absence certainly hasn’t helped this. The centre-back has been absent since March after undergoing surgery for an ACL injury.

However, he finally made his return to action for the Under-21s last night, and it look like he’d never left.

After the game, he wasted no time in sending a message to the fans as he shared his delight at being back playing again after such a long time out.

Eddie Howe believes Botman will go on to be one of the best centre-backs the Premier League has ever had, so he’ll be delighted to see him back.

Fabian Schar, Dan Burn and Lloyd Kelly have all featured recently at centre-back, but none of them have really been able to ensure consistency as a partnership.

If Botman’s Under-21 performance was anything to go by then he’ll be back in the starting lineup in no time, as Newcastle beat Chelsea 3-2 on Monday night.

He took to his Instagram account after the game to share a message to Newcastle fans on his story.

The message stated.

‘Bring back the good times.’

Should Lloyd Kelly be worried?

Lloyd Kelly has made six starts in his 10 appearances for Newcastle United in all competitions this season, which has been helped by Botman’s absence.

However, we believe that Kelly’s minutes will drastically decrease once Botman returns fully.

Dan Burn and Fabian Schar were preferred at the weekend as the Magpies secured their first clean sheet since the start of November in the Premier League.

Botman played a key part in Newcastle’s rise to the Champions League and is one of the first names on the team sheet when fit.

Howe’s admiration for the defender is clear and he’ll be itching to see him back in the side.
