Newcastle United could renew hostiles with bitter rivals Sunderland next season, which may make things interesting for midfielder Chris Rigg.
Sunderland are of course Newcastle United’s greatest rivals and could join them in the Premier League next season, should they navigate their way through the Championship play-offs later this month.
Rigg is highly rated on Wearside. At only 17, the central midfielder made 44 appearances across all competitions and, naturally, there is huge excitement.
Newcastle want to sign Rigg from Sunderland, though they are not alone in that. Rigg has been hailed as a “warrior” by former manager Tony Mowbray and has been linked with other big Premier League clubs.
Now, the teenager has made an interesting statement in regard to his future at the Stadium of Light.

Chris Rigg explains Newcastle United fan U-turn
Hebburn-born Rigg is from a family of Newcastle fans.
Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, however, he’s suggested Sunderland now “my club” even though he grew up supporting the Toon Army. In fact, he’s professed his love for the Black Cats, while even suggesting his father has been converted.
“Sunderland are my club, I’ve been here my whole life,” he said.
“I come from a family of Newcastle fans, there is no point hiding that, but it changes when you play for Sunderland in front of those fans. My family being Newcastle fans has no impact on me, it doesn’t change the way I feel about Sunderland. The fans have been unbelievable.
“They could have thought, ‘Nah, he’s a Newcastle fan’ or whatever, but I think I’ve shown what this club means to me. It’s not really a debate. My dad gives me a little bit of stick, but he comes to all Sunderland’s games. I think he is a secret Mackem now. He puts his son above everything, he loves watching me and he absolutely loves coming to our games.”

Chris Rigg compared to Manchester United legend
There is huge excitement about the teenager. Rigg scored four goals this season, emerging as a huge talent.
Such is the esteem in which he’s regarded, Rigg has been compared to Manchester United legend Bryan Robson.
It’s natural Rigg would feel a connection to Sunderland. Fan allegiance surely has to be different when you’re playing professionally, particularly for the team who gave you a chance in the first place.
Hopefully, it does not stop him joining Newcastle one day, however.
