Newcastle United are currently leading the race to sign a very exciting midfielder who is wanted by some of the biggest clubs in England.

Newcastle have placed a huge emphasis on bringing in some of the best young talent to the club and have already signed some promising players from around the world, but this time they may be looking a bit closer to home.

According to a new report from HITC, Newcastle the the current favourites to sign Sunderland midfielder Chris Rigg who is expected to make a big move to a Premier League club this summer.

Newcastle face tough competition for teenage star

Naturally Newcastle are not alone in their interest of the 16-year-old midfielder as Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United are all also believed to be chasing his signature.

However, Newcastle do have one secret weapon that is sure to help out with negotiations and that is the fact that both Rigg and his family are all Newcastle supporters.

Should Newcastle be able to offer the midfielder, who Tony Mowbray described as a ‘warrior‘, a clear pathway into the first team then surely for Rigg and his family it would be a no brainer, but of course it also depends on what the money would be like.

Sunderland won’t want to lose one of their most exciting talents, but there’s little they can do to stand in his way if he’s already made up his mind that he wants to leave the club in the coming transfer window.

Rigg has already made huge steps at an early stage

Rigg was first named on the bench for Sunderland at the very start of 2023 as a 15-year-old against Blackpool and though he didn’t come on, it will have been a very beneficial experience for him.

He only had to wait another six days before making his professional debut against Shrewsbury, incredibly a whole five-and-a-half months before his 16th birthday.

Rigg would go on to make three appearances in the FA Cup that season before making his first appearance in the Championship during this campaign, playing a further seven games and grabbing his first ever goal against Southampton.

Newcastle will have watched on with excitement in the hopes that can persuade the teenage midfielder to join his boyhood club and develop into a top talent for both club and country.
