The buildup to Newcastle United’s Tyne-Wear derby date with Sunderland took a huge turn on Thursday afternoon.
There has already been uproar on Wearside about where the 6,000 Newcastle fans will be sitting inside the Stadium Of Light on Saturday during the FA Cup third round clash. A lot of season ticket holders at Sunderland have been forced to give up their seat, much to their dismay.
It has led to a feeling amongst Sunderland fans that their club are rolling out the red carpet for their biggest rivals – and what happened on Thursday made things even worse.
Newcastle slogans adorn Sunderland bar inside Stadium Of Light
On Thursday, pictures emerged on social media of changes made to the Black Cats Bar, which will be occupied by Newcastle United fans this weekend.
The bar is usually adorned with Sunderland slogans, but that no longer was the case. Things like ‘haway the lads’ were changed to ‘howay the lads’, while ‘keep the red flag flying high’ became ‘keep the black and white flying high’. There was also a sign mocking former Black Cats manager Peter Reid, telling him to ‘cheer up’, as the old song goes.
The decision to allow these decoration changes went down down terribly on Wearside, as you could imagine. Their supporters are absolutely outraged, and rightly so. While it is funny for us Newcastle fans, you have to admit that there were would be similar fury if St James’ Park was redecorated with Sunderland slogans.
A terrible mistake was made, and the banners have already been taken down. Meanwhile, Sunderland have released a statement apologising to fans.
However, they are also dealing with another issue.

FA Cup ticket blunder could cost Sunderland
According to journalist Joel Bland, Sunderland could be fined by the FA due to a mistake regarding ticketing.
Paper tickets for Saturday’s game describe it as an ‘EFL League One’ game rather than an ‘FA Cup’ match. The incorrect branding could reportedly result in them receiving a fine, in what is another massive PR blunder.
First they have tarnished their reputation with their own fans, now they could take a financial hit.
It all appears to be going wrong on Wearside at the moment, which is all the encouragement Newcastle and Eddie Howe need. If we can start fast at the Stadium Of Light and get an early goal then the atmosphere could turn nasty very quickly…
