Ex-Newcastle United defender Steven Taylor has spoken about how well Dan Burn has done since joining the Magpies. Burn signed for Newcastle in January from Brighton & Hove Albion for £13 million (Sky Sports).

Since his arrival, the man from Blyth has been a rock at the back. He’s been a big reason as to why the Magpies’ defence has drastically improved since 2022 began. He’s formed quite the partnership with Fabian Schar, keeping out captain Jamaal Lascelles.

Should Newcastle stay up, Burn will have certainly played his part in securing survival. His performances haven’t gone unnoticed and has caught the eyes of many.

Taylor has first-hand experience of playing against Burn, describing him as an ‘absolute man mountain’

Taylor spoke to The Chronicle on the signings Newcastle made in January.

He had very high praise for Burn and said, “You’ve got a guy like Dan Burn who’s from the area, understands football and understands Newcastle United. I played against him when he was at Wigan and he’s an absolute man mountain. He understands, especially when we’re in a bit of a dogfight. For me, he’s the perfect signing.”

In the first half of the season, the Toon were prone to leaking goals. The defence has certainly been a big weakness this season. But in January, the club has certainly addressed the issue. Not just Burn, but Matt Targett and Kieran Trippier have been strong signings for the Magpies as well.

With many names linked throughout the window, some fans may have been disappointed. However, many were optimistic. He has Premier League experience and seeing how Brighton have fared since he left, he was an important player for the Seagulls.

It’s not been totally perfect, he has made a couple of errors leading to goals against Chelsea and Everton. However, Burn has definitely saved more points than he’s cost for Newcastle so far.

Some fans have wanted to see Burn called up for the England squad. Unfortunately, he didn’t make Gareth Southgate’s recent squad, but if he keeps up his form he’ll give the England boss something to think about. There’s still plenty of time before the World Cup this year, perhaps the 29-year-old may get a call-up soon.
